A person can only work as a nurse aide in Washington if he has a CNA Certification. Getting this certification means that you’ll have to complete a state-approved training program, pass the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination, and apply for a certification from the Washington State Department of Health.
Nurse Aide Training
There are various training programs in the state that can offer you the education and training that you need to become a competent nurse aide. Nurse Aide Training Programs or NATPs are offered by different healthcare institutions and schools such as hospitals, nursing homes, community colleges, vocational and technical schools, private training facilities, and government organizations.
Enrolling in an NATP means that you’ll be spending most of your time in the classroom for your lectures and in the clinical area for your practical training. Approved programs are required by the state to offer at least 85 hours of training. These hours are divided into 35 hours of theory and 50 hours of practical training.
Completing an NATP is an excellent way of establishing eligibility for the NNAAP exam. However, it’s not the only way. You can also qualify by completing one semester of nursing school as a nursing student or graduate; complete the U.S. Army 91-Program, the Navy’s Basic Hospital Corps School, or the Air Force’s Apprentice (Specialist) Program; you could also qualify if you were able to complete a training program that’s approved in another state.
National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination
The NNAAP exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates have the option to choose to take either a written or oral exam for the knowledge test. Both tests cost a total of $110. The payment must be submitted along with the other requirements to:
NACES/Washington State NNAAP
8501 North Mopac Expressway, Suite 400
Austin, Texas 78759
Candidates are required to pass both tests in order to gain entry into the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. Each candidate is given a maximum of three tries. If a candidate fails for the 3rd time, then he will be required to complete another training program.
The Nurse Aide Registry
This is a master list of all individuals who are allowed to work as full-time nursing assistants. Only the individuals whose names are on the Registry are allowed to apply for an NA Certificate from the DOH. These certificates will be one of the first things that a potential employer will look for. If you want to check your status on the Registry, you can call them at (360) 725-2570.
