The Nurse Aide Registry is a list of all the names of the individuals who were able to meet the federal and state’s testing and training requirements. If you wish to work as a long-term nurse aide in Washington, then you’ll have to gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry by passing the certification exam.

The certification exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Both tests are conducted on the same day at approved testing centers in the state. You can only take the test if you have completed a training program that’s approved by the Department of Social and Health Services. The good news is there are several routes that you can take to establish your eligibility.

Eligibility Routes:

New Certification Holders

This route is for persons who never had the any training in health care. These individuals are required to enroll in a nurse aide training program that’s approved by the DSHS. Approved programs offer 85 hours of training where 35 of those hours are for theory while the rest is allocated for practical training. Both theory and practical training are taught concurrently (at the same time). Most of the programs that are offered in the state can be completed within 8 to 24 weeks.

Nursing Students/Graduates

Assistants receive similar training as nursing students. Nursing students who successfully completed at least one semester of an approved school are allowed to apply directly for the certification exam without the need for further training. Applicants must submit proof of their education and training to the ADSA before they apply for the certification exam.

Out-of-State Nursing Students/Graduate or Nursing Assistants

It doesn’t matter that much where you receive your training. You can still apply as an out-of-state worker and take the certification exam if your training meets the NA certification requirements for Washington.

Military Nursing Assistant

A military nursing assistant is a person who has successfully completed the U.S. Army 91-C Program, the Air Force’s Apprentice (Specialist) Program, or the Navy’s Basic Hospital Corps School.  Medics and military corpsmen can also apply if they wish to become nurse aides. Like the other routes, they will need to submit proof of their training to ADSA before they can apply for the certification exam.

Alternative “Bridge” Program

A Home Care Aide or a Medical Aide who is certified by the Washington State Department of Health and who was able to complete a training program in the state that belongs to the Alternative “Bridge” Program may also certification exam.
