The Nursing Home Reform Act, which is now part of the OBRA OF 1987, was created to improve the quality of care that the patient’s receive in long term care facilities, as well as define the training and evaluation standards of the CNAs who wish to work in such facilities. In accordance with this, all aspiring nursing assistants must undergo the necessary training and take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program before they can be certified and be listed in the Nurse Aide Registry.
The NNAAP examination was designed to test the candidates in both knowledge and skills. To get their certification, they must pass both the written/oral test and the random skills evaluation. Each candidate will be given 3 attempts to pass all the tests. When they retake, they will only need to take the part that they fail. If they fail to pass after the 3rd attempt, the candidate will no longer be allowed to reapply for the exam, unless the candidate enrolls and completes another training program.
There are several ways to establish eligibility to apply for the exam, but most people choose to enroll in a state-approved CNA program. State-approved programs are required to offer 100 hours of training, which includes 40 hours of clinical practice. Those who trained in another state can also apply for the exam, provided that the program’s curriculum was similar to the ones in South Carolina.
If you are a CNA from another state and want to transfer and work in SC, then you should apply for reciprocity. You can get a reciprocity application packet by downloading it from www.pearsonvue.com. When you apply, your license must still be valid. In addition to the application forms, you will also be required to show a certificate of endorsement from your state, a copy of your SS card, transcript of records, and proof of your certification as a nursing assistant.
