To be able to work as a nursing assistant in Oklahoma you must first enroll in a CNA training program. The training program should be approved by the state’s Department of health. You must also be physically fit as well as have a good record with both the federal and the state. After you complete the program, you can then try to apply for the state license exams.
If you are thinking about entering the field of health, you should consider becoming a CNA. There are six different classifications of a nursing aide which include additional certifications and potential pay increases. The six classifications are:
• Long Term Care Aide (LTCA)
• Home Health Aide (HHA)
• Developmentally Disabled Direct Care Aide (DDCA)
• Residential Care Aide
• Adult Day Care Aide
• Certified Medication Aide (CMA)
Each of the classifications has its own specialties. For example, a HHA is a nursing aide that performs his duties at the client’s home; a CMA is a trained CNA who is allowed to give selected non-injectable medications to patients, while under the supervision of a nurse or a member of the medical team. Some of the certifications, like CMA, is considered an advanced certification and will require entry into the NAR and some experience as a CNA to establish eligibility for training.
To get a basic certification, you can either try to be a LTCA, a HHA, or a disabled direct care aide. To get certified, you will have to pass the competency exam, which is only offered to those who have received the proper education and training from a state-approved training program. These training programs are offered by different institutions like community colleges, private institutions, nursing homes, hospitals, and even online.
To be accepted into one, you must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or a GED. You should be able to read and write, and at least fairly understand English. All aspiring nursing aides are also required to pass the criminal background check, is done at both state and federal levels.
The competency exam in Oklahoma is conducted by the Headmaster Testing Service. It consists of a written exam and a skills evaluation, which are given on the same day. For those who may have problems with written English, such as foreign-trained nursing students, who applied may take the oral version of the knowledge test. To get into the NAR, the candidates must pass all the tests within 3 attempts taken within 2 years after completing their training.
If you wish to improve your skills as a nursing aide, then you should take an advance certification. It is possible to be certified in several other classes. The certification process for advance certifications like CMA will require additional training and testing. You can also aim to become a CNA II or III. For more information you may contact the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) at (405) 271-4085 or (800) 695-2157
