As a nursing assistant, you will be taking care of the patients with the skills and knowledge you learn in a CNA training program. You should make sure that, before you enroll, the program is approved by the state’s Department of Health. While in the program, you be spending hours in lectures and practicing skills training in an environment similar to that of a health care facility.
The law requires an individual to be certified and be on the Nurse Aide Registry before working as a CNA. Among the six classifications of nursing assistants (long term care aide, home health aide, certified medication aide, developmentally disabled direct care aide, adult day care aide, and residential care aide) you can initially enter the NAR as either a long term care aide or a home health aide, since some of the certifications require you to be registered before you can proceed for their training.
The basic certification process for an aspiring nurse aide begins by searching for an OSDH-approved training program. These programs are offered by many training institutions including nursing home and hospitals. A lot of the institutions also offer training for more than one kind of CNA certification. Generally, training programs in Oklahoma are required to offer the students no less than 75 hours of theories and 16 hours of practical training in a nursing facility. You will be covering different nursing concepts and procedures such as infection control, personal care, communication techniques, human anatomy, body mechanics, and many more.
As soon as you are done with your training, you can then apply for the state evaluation exam. This exam will test your competence to function as a nursing assistant in terms of skill and knowledge. Nursing student and graduates are also allowed to apply for this exam without the need for additional training. The examination consists of a written/oral part and a clinical skills evaluation. The OSDH has contracted D&S Diversified Technologies to help out with the conducting, scoring, and releasing of the exam. You can visit their website at www.hdmaster.com and find out more.
For those who are already CNAs listed in another state and with to transfer and work in Oklahoma, they may apply for reciprocity. When they apply, their certification must still be active and they must have a good standing relationship with the state they come from. All applications will also be asked to pass the national background check as well as submit documents that show proof of their training and education.
Basic CNA certifications in Oklahoma are only temporarily valid and must be renewed every 24 consecutive months. To be eligible for renewal, the nursing assistant must work for at least a day with 8 hours as a paid nursing assistant. During their work, they must be supervised by a registered nurse. State law also requires any individual who wishes to renew his license to submit an affidavit of legal residence to the Registry at:
