If you want to become a nursing aide in South Carolina, you will have to enroll in a state-approved training program. These programs are required to offer 100 hours of training, which will include 40 hours of clinical practice. During that time, you will be under the supervision of a qualified nursing aide instructor. Many of the programs can be completed within 6 to 12 weeks of training.

When you enroll, you will be tackling different nursing concepts that will help you handle different situations which you may encounter once you are in the clinical area. You will learn about infection control, mental health, personal care, basic care, safety and emergency, resident’s rights and independence, and communication skills. You will not be allowed to perform any procedures which were not taught in the classroom.

Once you are through, you can then apply for the NNAAP exam. This exam was designed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. to determine the capability of the nursing aide candidate in terms of both skills and knowledge. To get into the SC Nurse Aide Registry, you will have to pass both the written (oral) test and the clinical skills evaluation. If you plan on taking the oral test, you must inform Pearson VUE during your application. You can download a copy of the application packet from their website at www.pearsonvue.com.

Each candidate is given 3 attempts to pass all the tests. These attempts must also be done within 2 years of completing one’s training. If you fail to get certified within that time, you will have to enroll and complete another training program before you can reapply for the test.

Every time you complete a test, the evaluator will fax it to be scored. If there are no technical problems, you can expect the results to be returned within 10 minutes. If you passed all the tests, you can expect your CNA card to be mailed to you within 10 days after passing. You can check your record on the NAR by visiting the Pearson VUE website.

Your CNA certification will only be valid for 24 months. To keep your name on the registry, you must renew your certification by filling out the recertification forms and sending them along with the fees. To be eligible for renewal, you must show proof that you have worked for at least 8 hours as a paid nursing assistant.
