Nursing Assistant-Certified
Training to become a nursing assistant-certified in Washington is considered to be one of the best ways to jump-start a career as a healthcare provider. The process of becoming a nursing assistant is quick and relatively easy, and their demand is currently very high throughout the United States.
Nursing Assistant Training
How do you become a nursing assistant? The first step is to look for a training program that’s approved by the state’s DSHS. Nursing Assistant Training Programs or NATPs are offered through different institutions and schools such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, community colleges, nursing homes, high schools, government organizations, and private training facilities.
CNA training consists of at least 35 hours of classroom instructions and lab work, and an additional of 50 hours in the clinical area for the practical training portion of the program. Both theory and practical training are taught concurrently. However, before the students are allowed to handle the patients, they are first taught about the following concepts:
– Medical and Surgical Asepsis
– Communication and Interpersonal Skills
– Basic Nursing Skills and Procedures
– Respecting Patient Rights
– Promoting Patient Independence
– Safety and Emergency Care
Nursing Assistant Certification Exam
After you complete your training, the next step is to take and pass the certification exam. Taking this exam is an important process since it is your only way to get into the Nurse Aide Registry and apply for a NA Certification from the DOH afterwards. You can only work as a full-time nursing assistant if you have a certification and if your name is on the Nurse Aide Registry.
The certification exam is divided into two parts – a multiple-choice knowledge test and a random skills evaluation. You must pass both tests in order to get into the NAR. If you fail, you will have another 2 attempts to pass. Failing for the 3rd time means that you’ll have to undergo retraining before you can take the certification exam once more.
