Taking the CNA license exams is necessary to work as a nursing assistant. The state of West Virginia requires its nursing assistants to have a license/certificate. There are some things that must be met before you can take the exams like passing a training program and the required background checks.
Training is required to be approved by the WV Department of Health and Human Services. Courses will teach you the proper care of patients and primary health care nursing skills used on the job. At this time programs must offer a total of 120 hours of instruction. This includes at least 65 hours of class lectures and 55 hours of supervised skills experience. After you complete the required hours you can apply for the exams.
Nurse aides who complete training may apply to and work for medical facilities in the state for up to 4 months before taking the exams. However, before 4 months have passed the worker must be certified or they will be moved to a different non-resident contact position, or terminated from employment.
The examination to receive your certification is conducted by a company called Professional Healthcare Development, LLC. They can be reached for additional details at:

Those who pass the oral/written and skills tests are placed on the registry with an active status. The WV Nursing Assistant Program no longer provides certification cards. Your status can seen on the online registry which is used by employers to verify your license status before hiring.
This listing is valid for 2 years and must be renewed before the expiration date to continue with an active status there. Generally renewal is achieved by working 8 hours in a medical facility and submitting work verification. Those who do not renew in time will be required to retrain in a class.
