For you to become an efficient nursing aide, you must be well equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge that you will use when you take care of the residents. You can only achieve this if you enroll in a CNA training program. You can find that these programs will offer you a total of 75 hours of training, which will already include the needed clinical experience. As a nursing aide, you will be taught in a variety of topics such as infection control, mental health, communication techniques, and the different medical terms. You will also be taught on the basic nursing skills such as assisting in ambulation, feeding, dressing, bathing, toileting, and other daily activities. You will also learn how to take the vital signs and assist in emergency procedures when the need arises. Call Vicki Barber from Kentucky Health Choices for a list of approved schools at (502) 564-5707.
After you finish your state approved training course you can apply for the two-part certification exams. The exams consist of a manual skills exam and a written competency exam. Successful completion of the exams will enable your name to be entered in to the state nurse aide registry and you will become eligible to work for up to 24 months. Passing all the tests is necessary since it will be the only way for you to get your name entered in the nurse aide Registry. The state does not allow any nursing aide to work in any healthcare facility as a CNA if their name is not in the list. Once licensed you will need to keep your registration active by working in long-term care facility or medical center. At this time verification is having worked at least 8 hours for pay in a nursing related capacity in the state for each two year period. You can submit a letter from your employer, a paycheck stub, or a W-2 form as a form of proof to the registry.
