You cannot work in any health care facilities without a CNA license. You can only take the exams if you have met the state requirements like the completion of a CDPH-approved training program and passing the background checks.
If you are considering becoming a certified nurse aide, then the first step is to attend an instruction program that is approved by the state. State-approved programs will guarantee that you will learn the knowledge and skills that you will need to handle different situations that you may encounter while taking care of the patients.
During class instruction you will receive instruction on basic patient care to help you become an entry level caregiver in nursing homes and long term care facilities. Class course work will include both theoretical discussion and lectures as well as practical application skills experience. CNA training consists of 150 hours of classroom lessons and supervised clinical practice.
During the entire course students will be placed under the care of a CNA instructor. They will not be allowed to perform any procedure that has not yet been taught in the classroom nor will they be allowed to perform without the consent of the instructor. Prior to the start of the clinical rotation, students must first spend 16 hours learning the following concepts:
• Infection Control
• Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• Safety and Emergency Procedures
• Patient’s Rights and Independence
After completing the training program the next step is to challenge the certification exam. This if the final step in becoming a nurse aide. You can only work as a nurse aide if you are certified by the state that you are in.
The certification exam is divided into two parts – the written/oral knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation. Both of these parts are taken on the same day. Candidates are required to pass all the tests to get certified. If they fail in one part they may reapply and retake the test that they failed. They can only do this up to two times. If a candidate fails his 3rd attempt he will be required to complete another training program before they can reapply again.
After you pass the exams, your name will then be included in the state’s registry of Nurse Aides. CNA certifications are only valid for 24 months. Certification holders must renew their certification before it expires. If a nursing aide fails to renew his, he will be unable to continue working in a state-approved nursing facility.
An expired certificate can be reactivated by immediately challenging a competency evaluation exam.
