To work in a nursing facility in South Carolina, you must get your name on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. There are two ways to do this; one is by passing the state competency exam while the other is by applying for reciprocity.
The process of reciprocity is only available for individuals who are already nursing assistants but are currently registered in another state. When applying through this process, the applicant must still possess a valid certification. In the interest of the patients, applicants will be subjected to the criminal background checks, which will be done in both federal and state levels. If you wish to obtain a reciprocity application packet, you may call (800) 475-8290.
The competency exam in this state is offered by Pearson VUE. It consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a random skills evaluation of the nursing procedures that fall under the scope of the duties of a nursing assistant. There are several eligibility routes that can be taken to apply for the exam. Individuals who are able to meet at least one of the routes will be allowed to apply. These routes include:
• Completing a state-approved CNA training program.
• Completing a state-approved training program that is offered in another state but is similar to the ones in South Carolina.
• CNAs whose certifications whose have expired for not more than 24 months.
• LPNs, RNs, and Military Trained Candidates who wish to work as a nursing assistant.
When applying, you will need to indicate if you want to take the oral exam instead of the written test. You should also indicate if you need any special considerations when taking the exam. Applicants who are employed by or have received an offering from a Medicaid nursing facility will not be charged for any testing fees.
If you pass, your name will be added to the NAR. It will remain there for 24 months. If you wish to continue your eligibility to work as a nursing assistant, you must renew your certification before it expires. Pearson VUE sends out a notice, along with the renewal forms, at least 2 months before your certification’s expiration. To avoid any problems of receiving them, you must notify the Registry if you changed your name or address by calling (800) 475-8290.
