A nursing assistant certification is a requirement to work as a long-term in healthcare facilities in Washington. This certification will be one of the things that employers will instantly look for when you apply for a job. The certification process for nursing assistants in Washington starts with the enrollment into a DSHS-approved training course and ends with passing the state’s certification exam.
There are various training courses that you can enroll in to learn the knowledge and skills needed to become a nursing assistant. One of the best ways for you to learn how is to enroll in a state-approved NATP. An NATP or Nursing Assistant Training Program will teach you all you need to know about being a competent nursing assistant. Their curriculum is made up of at least 35 hours of lectures and 50 hours of supervised clinical practice. Both theory and practical training are taught concurrently. It can take about 2 to 6 months to complete a program depending on the one you choose.
As soon as you are through, the next step is to apply for the NNAAP exam. This is a two part examination that comprises of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates who have trouble taking written examinations can request for an oral exam for no extra cost. Candidates must pass both tests to gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry.
If a candidate fails, he can immediately reapply and reschedule another exam. Every CNA candidate is given 3 attempts to pass. During the retesting, a candidate is only required to retake the test that he failed. If a candidate fails for the 3rd time, then he must complete another training program before he can reapply once again.
Once you get certified, you’ll need to work for at least 8 hours as a paid nursing assistant to qualify for renewal. NA Certifications in Washington must be renewed every 2 years. If a holder lets his certification expired for more than 2 years, then he will have to undergo retraining and retesting to work as a nursing assistant once again.
