If you want to work in a long-term care facility as a nursing assistant you must get your license. But to do so, you must first finish a nurse aide training program that is certified by the state. The completion of a CNA training program is a basic requirement to become a nursing assistant. These programs are required by the state to get authorization first before they are allowed to handle any students. Because of its increasing demand, more and more training centers are now offering nursing assistant courses.
As a student, you will have a total of 75 hours of training. This of course may last longer depending on the program which you enrolled in. These hours will be divided into 16 hours of classroom lectures, and another 16 hours of laboratories before you are exposed to the actual setting. During that entire time in the clinical area, there will be a registered nurse who will supervise you since the state also requires that all primary instructors be a registered nurse. The state has also recommended topics that should be included in the curriculum. These topics include basic personal care, infection control, care of the resident’s/patient’s environment, and the emergency procedures. All of these will only take a few weeks to complete; then you will be able to apply for the license exams when you receive an Authorization to Test (ATT). The ATT will describe testing facilities near you that you can contact to schedule a test date.
When you arrive for your test you will need to pass two parts. These are a written portion and a skills demonstration. Those able to pass both parts become certified and included on the state registry. For questions regarding testing you can call the Michigan Nurse Aide Customer Service Line at 1-800-752-4724. Once approved your license will expire every 2 years. You must renew it before it expires. You can check the status of a certification or get more information about renewal by calling 1-800-748-0252.
