To become a nurse aide in the state of Illinois, you must first be able to finish a training program. The program that you complete should be approved by the state in order to become eligible to apply for the exams afterwards. There are a number of institutions located across the state that offer such programs. Examples of these institutions include colleges, high schools, healthcare centers, and community training centers. You must be at least 16 years old to enroll in the programs and be at least physically capable of handling different patients.
Classes should provide practical experience in health care related skills in a medical facility setting. As a nursing assistant student, you will be taught different concepts of the Fundamentals of Nursling such as infection control, communication skills, rehabilitation, medical terms, and mental health. You will also be trained on the different nursing skills such as assisting in partial/full bed baths, feeding the patients, assisting in dressing, ambulating, performing ROM exercises, and other daily activities.
All you will learn will then be tested during the CNA competency exams. The exams will have a written and a skills demonstration exam. In order to get your name entered in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry, you must be able to pass all the tests. You, as well as every other applicant, will be given three chances to pass. If you fail for the third time, you will be required to undergo retraining. Applicants must have a clean background with no disqualifying convictions and pass a criminal history records check as per the Health Care Worker Background Check in order to qualify.
