There are a total of four different ways for you to become a nursing assistant in South Carolina.
The first one is by getting certified after passing the CNA certification exam. This exam consists of a written/oral test and a clinical skills demonstration. Before you can enroll, you will need to complete a state-approved 100-hour training program. Once you complete your training, you will be eligible to apply for the exams. This eligibility will only remain valid for up to 2 years. This means that you will only have 2 years to pass all the tests in certification exam.
The second route to become a nursing assistant is by getting trained as a medic or a corpsman in the military. Since this is a case to case basis, you will need to contact the SCDHHS and check if you are able to immediately challenge the certification exam. You must send a copy of your military training and experience along with your contact information and full name to scnar@scdhhs.gov.
The third route is available to individuals who were able to complete an RN or LPN education program. Like the second route, this is also a case to case basis. Possible candidates applying through this route will need to submit a copy of their transcript of records or a letter from their nursing advisor to SCDHHS. Once determined eligible, the next step is to challenge the certification exam.
In the final route, applicants through this route will no longer be required to take the exam. This route is only available to nursing aides who assistants who are already listed in another state’s Registry. To be accepted, the applicant must have training that is similar to the ones in SC. Their records should also remain active and that they must have no records of patient abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of a patient’s property. If you have any questions about this route or would like to acquire an application form, please call (800) 475-8290 or visit www.pearsonvue.com.
