There are different ways to start a career in the field of health. Because of the increasing demand for nursing assistants, there is now an increasing amount of people who are training to become one. To be a nursing assistant, you will need to get certified.
The certification process in South Carolina begins by enrolling in a state-approved training course. These courses are offered by different institutions. They offer a minimum of 100 hours of training, which is divided into lectures and practical training. During the entire course, the students will be supervised by qualified CNA instructors, who possess enough nursing experience and have completed a Train the Trainer course. Depending on which course you enroll in, it can take you an average of 6-12 weeks to complete a course.
As soon as you receive your certification of completion of training, you may immediately start on completing the requirements for the certification exam. You can get a copy of the application forms from your instructor or by downloading it from http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/074101.pdf. The forms must be sent to:
NACES Plus Foundation Inc.
8501 North Mopac Expressway, Suite 400
Austin, TX 78759
You will also need to send the payment of the testing fees. Since this is your first time to take the exams, it is mandatory to take both the written/oral test and the skills evaluation test, which means you must pay a total of $101. If you are currently employed by a Medicaid nursing facility or have received an offer of employment from them, you will not be allowed to pay for your fees. These payments must be made by your employer.
Each CNA candidate is given three attempts to pass all the tests. These attempts must be made within 2 years of completing training. If you fail, you will need to reapply for the exam and take the exam which you failed in. If you fail after the third try, then you must attend another training course before you can reapply.
Once you pass the certification exam and your name is now on the NAR, you will be allowed to work as a nursing assistant in SC so long as your certification remains valid. CNA certifications are only valid for 2 years and must be renewed before they expire. To be eligible for renewal, you must work for 8 hours every 2 years.
