Starting a career as a nursing assistant is easier that most people think. Because of the high demand for nursing assistants throughout the country, especially in South Carolina, new CNAs can easily find work. To work as a nursing assistant in South Carolina, you must get your name entered in the state Nurse Aide Registry. There are two ways to do this – one is by testing while the other is by applying for reciprocity.
RECIPROCITY
Reciprocity is only available to individuals who are already a nursing assistant but is currently registered in another state’s NAR. Reciprocity allows that individual to be listed in another state’s NAR while still remain on the Registry that he is currently listed on.
For those who want to apply, you can get a copy of the Reciprocity Application Forms from http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/074102.pdf. When you apply, make sure that your license is still valid and you are not listed on the NA Abuse Registry. The application forms must be sent to:
Pearson VUE
South Carolina Nurse Aide Registry
PO Box 13785
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19101-3785
TESTING
Challenging the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam is the only option for those who have not yet been certified as a nursing assistant. This exam is conducted by Pearson VUE with the help of the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Service. This exam consists of a written/oral test and a return demonstration of randomly selected nursing skills. In order to be certified, you will have to pass all the tests.
Before you can apply, you will need to establish eligibility. Although there are different ways to do this, one of the best is to attend and complete a CNA training program that is approved by the South Carolina Department of Health and Services. These programs take 100 hours of training to complete. They are offered by different institutions such as vocational and technical colleges, health care facilities such as nursing homes and hospitals, and private training facilities.
Once you are certified, you will be allowed to work as a nursing assistant in Medicaid nursing facilities in SC. Your certification will be valid for 2 years. If you wish to continue your eligibility, you must renew your certification before it expires. To be eligible for renewal, you will need to work a minimum of 8 hours every 2 years. The renewal forms are sent to the address on your record at least 1 month before your certification expires. If you do not receive these forms, you can get a copy by downloading it at http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/074103.pdf.
