If you are planning to become a nursing assistant, then you will need to be well equipped with the knowledge and skills that are needed to be a nurse aide. To become one, your fist task would be to find a state-certified training program to enroll in. Your training will be composed of classroom lectures, skills training, and a day to day exposure to the clinical setting when you are deemed ready. During your time in training, you will be under the care of a registered nurse of the state of Michigan. Only approved CNA classes that offer at least 75 hours of instruction that includes the mandatory 51 tasks are accepted as valid.
The completion of a state-approved program will give you the opportunity to apply for the license exams. The registry will send you an Authorization to Test form (ATT). Once you receive your ATT application, you will also get a list of available testing facilities. You can call a testing center to arrange an exam date. These exams will be composed of a written and a skills demonstration part. You will need to pass all the tests in order for you to get your name in the Registry.
Once your name is in the registry, you will have to maintain that status if you wish to continue your work as a nursing assistant. Your status will expire every two years. In order to be eligible for renewal, you must have worked for 8 hours under the supervision of a RN. If you are working in a long-term care facility, then you will also need an additional of 12 hours of in-service training. You can call the registry to speak with someone about requirements by calling 1-800-748-0252.
