To work in Rhode Island as a nursing aide, you will have to get certified. Getting certified in this state means that you’ll need to complete a state-approved training program, pass the criminal background checks, and pass the NNAAP Exam. Compared to other careers in the field of medicine, becoming a nursing aide is still quicker and much more affordable.

nurse-class-graduation-484842Due to the high number of incidences that occurred in the clinical area that involved healthcare providers, all aspiring nursing aides must not get fingerprinted and pass the national background checks to be listed on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. You need to make sure that you’ll be able to pass the checks before you begin your search for a training program to enroll in.

Training programs in Rhode Island are offered by various healthcare institutions and schools. If you found a program that isn’t on our list, then just make sure that it is approved by the Rhode Island Department of Health before you enroll in it. . The majority of the programs in Rhode Island consist of 88 hours of classroom/lab instructions and 32 hours of supervised practical training under the supervision of a CNA Instructor. Other programs offer a total of 100 hours, which already includes 20 hours of practical training. After completing your training, you will have up to one year to apply for the NNAAP exam and get certified.

The NNAAP exams are provided in two parts which are a multiple-choice written test and a practical skills demonstration. Candidates who have trouble reading can request to take the oral version of the written test. Both written and oral exam consists of 70 questions; and candidates only have 120 minutes (2 hours) to answer them all.  During the practical portion of the exam, candidates will be given 25 minutes to perform 5 randomly selected nursing skills.

There are 22 fundamentals nursing aide skills that you will need to know to pass the practical skills demonstration. Examples of these skills include hand washing & hygiene, applying elastic stockings, assisting to ambulate, using the bedpan correctly, denture assistance, and radial pulse procedures. You can get the complete list of skills that may come out of the exam by visiting www.pearsonvue.com, and download a copy of the Candidate Handbook.

The results of the exam are released on the same day if there are no technical problems. If you pass both tests, then your name will be added to the Nurse Aide Registry. The Registry will then mail you your CNA license within a few days after passing. This license will allow you to work in a federal nursing facility as long as you keep it active. If you do not receive your license within 60 days, please call the DOH at (401) 222-5888.
