For those who desire to become a certified nursing assistant in Texas you will need to join a school program and pass the competency exams. Before you enroll in a class you will want to make sure it has been licensed by the Department of Aging and Disability Services. you can call them for class verification from their phone number at 512-438-5495 to check the current status of a school.
When you are enrolled you will receive a variety of different skills and procedural training that includes both classroom instruction, and skills practice in a clinical environment. During your clinical skills portion you will utilize common tasks and practice them in a setting similar to that found in a health care facility.
After your training requirement is met you have 24 months to take the license exam to get your certification and be eligible to work long term. Your school can help you arrange a time and place to take this two part exam. You can also call 1-800-444-5178 the number for the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services to help you schedule a test date. When you take the test you’ll see that it includes two parts which are a written and a skills test. You are required to pass each portion of the exam in no more than 3 attempts. Once you pass you become added to the registry and are listed their for a 24 month duration. You can call this number (1-800-452-3934) with your social security number to check your status on the nurse aide registry any time and follow the prompts when asked.
Those who have previously gone through training to become a nurse aide in another state may be qualified to apply for reciprocity in Texas. If you have received proper training and learned the fundamentals of nursing from a certified nursing facility in another state, then you will no longer be required to enroll in a CNA course to be able to apply for the license exams. This applies to nursing graduates, medics from the military, and those CNA students from other states that have not yet taken the exams.
