Passing the license exams is a requirement to be able to work in Texas as CNA. The state requires its nurse aides to have a certification to be able to work for a long period. Current nursing assistant students of a training program can only work for up to 4 months before they need to show certification.
Before you can take the exams you will need to enroll in a course that teaches the fundamental skills of a nursing assistant. Classes must be licensed by the Department of Aging and Disability Services and provide the proper amount of hourly instruction. Currently students need to undergo a total of 75 hours of instruction. This is the minimum amount required and includes at least 51 hours of class coursework and lectures, and 24 hours of clinical task practice.
After you have completed your course you can have your school help you located a test location and set up a time to take the competency exam. The two part exam is made up of a manual skills part and a written part. Applicants will need to complete both parts to qualify for certification on the state registry. During the written part one must answer 70 multiple choice problems. For the manual part, one must successfully demonstrate five skills used by nurse aides that are chosen at random and performed in a medical setting.
Those who pass both portions of the exam become certified and are listed with active status. Once listed in the registry you are posted there for a period of 24 months. In addition you will receive a certification 4 to 6 weeks after completion of the exam. You can find out your status on the registry by calling the hotline with your social security number and following the prompts at 1-800-452-3934.
For more information about requirements of the registry you can call 512-438-5495 the number for DADS. If you need help locating a testing facility for the license exams contact the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services at 1-800-444-5178.
