All nursing assistants who wish to work in a nursing facility in Oregon must complete a nursing assistant 1 training program. To ensure that the quality of training that the aspiring nursing aides receive is good and meet the federal and state’s standards, all training programs in Oregon are required to be certified by the OSBN before they take on any student.
For a program to be certified, it must complete the proper forms that were provided by the Board, pay the necessary fees, and provide other important requirements such as a copy of the curriculum, teaching methods, evaluation methods, and a sample of their final exam. These programs must also offer the student a minimum of 150 hours of training, which are divided equally into lectures and duties in an actual clinical area. If a training program loses its certification while still handling students, those students are allowed to complete their training.
The completion of a level 1 CNA training program that is approved by the state will make the student eligible to apply for the state competency evaluation exam. A nursing graduate, regardless of which country he/she graduated, can apply directly and take the exam, provided that he/she is able to provide a copy of his/her diploma and transcript of record. For those that graduated in a different country, they must provide proof of legal entry.
Only the names of individuals that are on the Nurse Aide Registry are allowed to work as a nursing assistant 1in a nursing facility. Aside from passing the state competency exam, another option of getting into the Registry is by applying for reciprocity. A certified nursing assistant who wants to apply through this must have worked for a minimum of 400 hours within the last 2 years. This time requirement is negated if the applicant has had his certificate for less than 2 years.
