If you want to become a nursing assistant, you have to comply with the different requirements of the state. Among all the requirements, the most important are the completion of CNA classes and passing the federal and state background checks for criminal records. Without these two, you will not be allowed to proceed and take the state competency exam.
Programs will need to offer at least 40 hours of clinical duties in a nursing home or setting. Once you have completed the needed hours of training and passed a routine background check, you will be eligible to take the license examination. If you pass the exams, your name will be entered in the online registry. Taking this exam is a necessary step since the state does not allow anyone to work in a healthcare facility if their name is not on the registry.
The competency exams for this state are handled by different institutions. Their exams are composed of two parts, a written exam and a skills evaluation. In order to get your name entered on the registry, you have to pass all the exams. Every applicant will be given three attempts to pass the exams. If you fail for the third time, you will be required to undergo retraining before you will be allowed to take the exams again. If you are a medic that was trained in the military, you may also take the exams and become a nursing assistant. You must be able to provide proof of your training and you must have at least 40 hours of experience as a medic. For more information, you can follow this link: www.idph.state.il.us/nar/cnafacts.htm.
