The Washington State Nurse Aide Registry is a list that contains all the names of individuals who are allowed to work as nursing assistants in Washington. According to the law, a person’s name must be on the Registry within 4 days after starting work. You can gain entry into the NAR as either a nursing assistant-registered or a nursing assistant-certified.
Nursing Assistant-Registered
All you need to become a nursing assistant-registered is to apply entry into the NAR. There are no requirements to become one. Once you become a nursing assistant-registered you’ll be allowed to work in a healthcare facility. However, nursing assistant-registered are only allowed to work for a maximum of 120 days from the start of their work. To keep working, the NA-R must advance and become a nursing assistant-certified or NAC.
Nursing Assistant-Certified
NACs are persons who gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry through testing. Only NACs are allowed to work as full-time nursing assistants in any healthcare setting that they might be hired. One doesn’t need to become a NA-R before becoming an NAC.
All you need to become licensed is to pass both tests of the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam or NNAAP exam. This exam consists of a written/oral test and a skills evaluation exam. Only candidates who were able to complete an approved training program can apply and take this exam.
One of the most common ways of qualifying for the exam is to successfully finish a DSHS-approved NATP. Nursing Assistant Training Programs in Washington offer at least 35 hours of lectures and 50 hours of supervised clinical practice. Both theory and practical training are taught at the same time.
Registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, military trained medics, nursing students/graduates, and out-of-state nursing assistants who have not taken the NNAAP exam may apply without the need for further training. They will have to send proof of their education and training such as an official transcript to the OBRA-NAR before they submit their applications for the NNAAP exam. All who successfully become certified will need to maintain their listing on the registry. You can speak with a representative of the state’s call center to learn more at 360-236-4700.
