A nursing aide is one of the most in demand profession in the field of health care today. Because of such high demands most people are now wondering how to become a nursing aide in California. Some of the most frequently asked questions include:
• What is required to become a CNA in California?
Both the federal and state requires that all nursing aides must be properly trained and certified in order to work in an approved nursing facility. The Aide and Technician Certification Section of the Licensing and Certification Program is responsible for certifying nursing aides in California.
In order to work as a nursing assistant in California you must complete a CNA training program and pass the state examination. The program must be approved for you to be eligible to take the exams. There are also some online courses that you can use to complete some of the hourly requirement. An advantage of taking an online course is that you get to learn the fundamentals of nursing from home and attend classes in a physical location for the clinical portion of the school requirement.
• Where can I get proper nursing aide training?
CNA training programs are offered by different educational and health institutions. You can find programs being offered by community colleges, nursing homes and hospitals, private training centers, and even the American Red Cross. To ensure that you will receive proper education and training, you must only enroll in a program that is approved by the CA Department of Public Health.
CDPH-approved programs offer 150 hours of training. The training hours are divided into 50 hours for lectures and 100 hours of supervised clinical training. Students will be handled by qualified CNA instructors. Each instructor is may only handle up to 15 students to allow maximum learning.
• What will I learn during my training?
During your training you will learn a variety of frequently used skills and duties you will use on the job as a nurse aide. Common tasks taught will include: dressing residents, bathing, toileting, assisting with nourishment, transporting using wheelchairs, assisting residents with canes & walkers, measuring and recording vital signs [including blood pressure, temperature, respiration, and pulse], catheter care [including draining, and recording intake and output], transporting patients, infection control, patient’s rights, postmortem care, safety awareness, and infection control.
• How can I get certified by the ATCS?
When you have finished the class requirement you are given 24 months to complete the nurse aide exams. If you have never been certified as a nursing aide before, then you are required to pass both the knowledge and skills test of the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination or NNAAP exam. If you fail in one part, you will have to reapply and retake the part you failed. If you fail for the 3rd time, you will be required to complete another 150-hour NATP.
The exams are a multiple choice test about common procedures and tasks and a manual test where you will need to demonstrate some typical nursing related duties in a health care environment. You can contact the CA Public Health Certification program phone number at (916) 552-8700 to find out more about becoming licensed in the state.
• Does California offer CNA reciprocity?
Yes. California is very open when it comes to other nursing aides who want to work in the state. When applying, applicants must have a current certification and a clean background record. Applicants who get approved for reciprocity will not be required to take any test. The ATCS will immediately certify them once all requirements have been met.
