A CNA certification is required before an individual is allowed to work in a long term care facility as a nursing aide. If you are planning on becoming a certified nursing aide and do not have any nursing background, then you will have to enroll in a training program.
By enrolling and completing a state-approved nursing assistant program, you will become eligible to challenge the certification exam (properly known as the National Nurse Aid Assessment Program Exam). If you are able to pass all the tests, your name will be entered into the South Carolina Nurse Aide Registry. Once on the Registry, you will receive your CNA card and will be allowed to work as a nursing aide for up to two years.
The first part of the certification exam is the knowledge test. This test is given in a 70-item multiple-choice written exam. For those who have problems in reading English, they may request to take the oral test instead. This (oral) test can be taken in either English or Spanish. Candidates will be given a maximum of 2 hours to answer all the questions. The questions will be taken in portions that cover the different topics that were required in the OBRA of 1987. To pass this exam, the candidates must not get a total score of less than 70%.
The second part of the exam is the skills evaluation. Here, the candidates will be given a simple situation where they will be asked to do 5 nursing skills in front of a nursing aide evaluator. Out of all the skills, only 4 of them will be random since one will always be Hand-Washing. The other skills will be randomly picked from a set list that consists of the skills that are needed by a CNA. In order to pass, the candidates must perform all skills satisfactorily.
If you fail in at least one exam, you will be required to reapply and retake the test that you failed. All candidates will only be given a maximum of 3 attempts. If you still fail after the third try, then you must complete another training program before you can apply again.
