What does it take to become a nursing assistant in WV?
Like other states, you must successfully complete a state-approved training program and get certified by passing the competency exam. This will guarantee that you are a competent nursing aide and will be able to take care of the patients properly.
What to do to get proper training?
You can get all the training that you need by enrolling in a state-approved NATP or Nurse Aide Training Program. NATPs offer at least 120 hours of training. These hours consist of 65 hours of lectures and 55 hours of supervised clinical practice. Students are handled by a qualified CNA instructor during the entire duration of a program. Depending on the program you choose, it can take you from 1 to 4 months to complete your training.
Can you establish eligibility through other means?
Yes, if you are currently enrolled in an approved RN/LPN nursing program and have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Nursing within the last 2 years and if you have an average grade of “C”. You must also have completed at least 32 hours of providing nursing services in a Medicaid/Medicare health care facility.
You can also avoid the training requirements if you currently have an active registration/certification as a CNA in another state. You can go to www.wvdhhr.org and download the complete application forms for reciprocity. Applicants who have records of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of patient’s properties is not allowed to work in a state-approved health care facility.
How long can you work as a nursing assistant?
You can work as so long as your certification remains active. To keep it so, you’ll have to renew your certification every 2 years. You’ll be required to provide proof of employment for at least 8 hours to qualify for renewal. The state does not require nursing assistants to undergo continuing education. Instead, they require health care facilities to do at least 12 hours of continuing education as a part of their yearly evaluation.
