A CNA certification is a requirement to work as a nursing aide in South Carolina. One can only become certified if one’s name is on the Nurse Aide Registry. If you have no previous certifications as a nursing aide, then this means you will have to take on the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination.
The NNAAP exam was designed to define and evaluate the standards of a nursing aide. This exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation. Candidates will be given the option to take the knowledge exam in its oral or written version. If you wish to take the oral test, you must request this during your application. There is no additional charge for the oral test. To get into the NAR, you must pass both the exams.
Each candidate is given three attempts to pass all the tests. If you fail, you can reapply for the exams after 45 days. When retaking the examination, you will only need to take the part that you failed in. If you are only going to take the knowledge test, you must pay $30 to NACES in the form of a money order or a company check. The skills evaluation cost $71. If you still fail after the third attempt, then you will be required to complete another training program before you can reapply.
If you do pass all the tests, your name will be listed on the South Carolina NAR. Pearson VUE will also mail your CNA card and wallet card within 10 days to your address. If you do not receive this, please call Pearson VUE at (800) 475-8290. You can view your results by going online to www.pearsonvue.com.
Your name on the Registry will remain there for 2 years. If you wish to maintain your status, you must work for at least 8 hours to become eligible for renewal. Pearson VUE will send you the Renewal Notice at last 60 days prior to the expiration of your certification. Once you receive them, you will need to contact your employer and have him complete the employer portion of the recertification forms. If you have any questions regarding the recertification process, feel free to contact the number provided above.
