Like many states, before you are allowed to work as a nursing assistant, you are required to undergo proper training in a state-certified CNA course. Because of the high demand for nursing aides, different institutions like colleges and community training centers now offer training courses. These programs are required by the state to offer a minimum of 180 hours of training. Before you can enroll, you should be of legal age and have passed the 9th grade. In addition students must be at least 16 years old and have a clean police record.
As a nursing assistant student, you will be taught the different Fundamentals of Nursing such as therapeutic communication, infection control, mental health, rehabilitation, as well as the different medical terms. You will also be trained on the different nursing skills such as taking the vital signs, maintaining the patient’s hygiene, and assisting in their daily activities. All you learn will be tested when you take on the license exams. Taking the license exams is the only way to get your name entered on the Nurse Aide Registry. To do this, you must be able to pass both the written exam and the skills evaluation. Once your name is on Registry, you will then receive your license or certification.
