Because of the demand for nursing aides, more and more people now want to become a CNA. According to the OBRA of ’87, all those who want to work as a nursing aide must be certified and be listed on a State Nurse Aide Registry.
f you have no nursing aide background, then your first step in becoming a nursing aide is to look for a state-certified CNA program. These programs offer a minimum of 100 hours of training, with at least 40 hours of clinical training. During your classroom lectures, you will learn different nursing concepts such as infection control, personal care, communication techniques, safety and emergency, mental health, human anatomy, and many more. Once you complete the classroom and clinical training hours, you must then take on the final exam to complete your training.
By completing a state-approved program, you will become eligible to apply for National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination. This exam is not only available to those who completed a CNA program. Nursing students, graduates, and military-trained medics may also be eligible to apply. Since this is a case-to-case basis, they will have to contact the SC Department of Health and Human Services at scnar@scdhhs..gov to check if they are eligible to apply.
When applying, you will need to complete an application packet, which you can either get from your instructor or download it from www.pearsonvue.com. Aside from the application form and the payment of the fees ($101 for both exams), you will also need to send a photo ID, your birth certificate, and a copy of your SS card. Applicants who are employed in a Medicaid-nursing facility may not be charged for any of the testing fees.
The NNAAP exam consists of a written/oral test and a skills evaluation. You will have to pass all the tests to get your name on the NAR. Once you pass, you will also receive in the mail your nursing assistant card. Your certification will only be valid for 24 hours. To keep your eligibility, you must work as a nursing aide for at least 8 hours. The application forms will be sent to your mailing address at least 60 days before your certification’s expiration.
