In order for you to become a nursing assistant, you will need to undergo proper education and training. You can only get these by enrolling in a state-approved training program. These programs will take an average of 2 to 6 months to complete. In order for you to graduate from the program, you must be able to have a total of 180 hours of training. As of this writing the requirements are ninety hours of theoretical studies, seventy hours of supervised clinical skills experience, and twenty hours of clinical lab work. As a nursing assistant student, you will be spending your time in classroom lectures, skills training, and clinical duties. You will be taught the basic nursing skills, which you will be using to take care of the patients. When you go to the clinical area for your duties, you will be placed under the care of a registered nurse or another member of healthcare team.
Once you meet the required number of hours and complete your training, you will be allowed to apply for the nurse aide competency exams. If you are able to pass all the tests, your name will be automatically entered in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. You will need to renew your status every 2 years to keep your name on Registry and be allowed to work as a CNA in this state. Call the Licensing and Regulatory Services at 1-800-791-4080 to speak with an employee for help answering any questions you have about requirements.
