California is an exciting place to start a career as a nursing aide. The demand for CNAs in this state is higher than the country’s average. California nurse aides receive some of highest salaries; earning an average of $27,000 in a year. If you want to work as a nursing aide in this state, then you will have to get certified by the Aide and Technician Certification Section.
To become a CNA in California you must complete a training program and take the state license exams. The training for nursing assistants includes state and federally mandated health care instruction and clinical experience to help learn the procedures and tasks you will need on the job. Training must include at least 60 hours of theoretical coursework and 100 hours of clinical experience that can be on the job and under the direct supervision of an experienced nurse. Those who pass the class requirement are allowed 24 months to pass the competency certification tests.
If you have no background in this field, then the only way for you to get certified is to challenge the certification exam. The certification exam is divided into two parts – the knowledge exam and the clinical skill test. The state has authorized Pearson VUE to help conduct the exams. If you visit www.pearsonvue.com, you can get a copy of the Candidate Handbook, which contains detailed information regarding the certification exam.
Before you can take the exam, you must first apply for it. Only properly trained individuals are allowed to apply. You can apply for the exam if you meet any of the following eligibility routes:
• Complete a CDPH-certified nursing aide training course
• Get trained by the Military as a medic or corpsman
• Apply as an RN or LPN
• Attend or complete a nursing education program
The competency examination will be made up of a written and a skills demonstration part. All that you have learned in the training program like infection control, patient’s rights, emergency procedures, etc, will be tested in the written portion. If you want, you can also opt to choose an oral exam for the first part. As for the skills demonstration, you will be asked to perform five different procedures. This manual test is setup to simulate a real nursing environment. Those who successfully pass the exams are added to the registry and can then seek employment.
Candidates are only given 3 attempts to pass. When you are retaking the exam, you will only need to take the test that you failed. If you still fail after the 3rd attempt, you will be required to complete a CDPH-approved CNA training course.
Normally, the results of the certification exam are released on the same day. If you pass, the ATCS will send your CNA certificate to the mailing address you provided them upon application for the exam. You can expect your certificate to arrive within 10 business days after your exams. This certificate will act as proof that you are eligible to work in a certified nursing facility. To maintain your eligibility you must renew your certificate every 2 years.
The ATCS sends out notices at least 4 months before the certification’s expiration day. To avoid problems, please inform the ATCS if you change your name or address. They must be informed within 60 days of the change. You can also request to get a duplicate certificate with your updated information on it by sending the request form (http://www.cdph.ca.gov/pubsforms/forms/CtrldForms/cdph0929.pdf).
