CNAs in the state of Ohio are known as State-tested nursing aides or STNAs. In order to become one, you will need to undergo a state-approved program and pass the license exams. Before you are able to enroll in a training program, you must provide your high school diploma and pass the criminal background checks. These checks are done at both federal and state levels.
The full-course training programs last 5-8 weeks and consists of 75 hours of training. Your hours will be divided into 16 hours in classroom doing lectures and 59 hours doing clinical training. You will be taught in various subjects like medical terms, infection control, mental health, personal care, therapeutic communication techniques, and safety and emergency procedures.
The next step is to pass both the written and the skills portion of the evaluation exam. The competency exam was developed to determine the competency of the aspiring nursing aide to take care of a patient. To get into the Registry, you must be able to pass all the tests. Even if the individual is not on the Registry, a licensed long-term care facility may still hire him as a nursing aide if he is competent in providing nursing aide care.
