The Nurse Aide Registry keeps all the records of individuals who were able to meet the both the written and the skills test criteria to work as a certified nurse aide in a long-term care facility. Only those who are found on the Registry are allowed to work in the state. The Registry also includes the records of nurse aides who had previous accounts of abuse, neglect, malpractice, or misappropriation of the resident’s property while inside the care facility.
In the state of Ohio, CNAs are commonly known as state-tested nursing aides or STNAs. To gain entry into Registry one should first complete a state-approved training program. You can either opt to enroll in a basic course, which last for only 2 weeks, or take the full 5-8 week course. The subjects that will be tackled during the training will include basic patient care, safety procedures, respecting and promoting the patient’s rights and independence, proper hygiene, medical terminologies, and many more.
Training is necessary to qualify to take the certification exams. During your classes you will need to complete a minimum amount of instruction including 16 hours of classroom teaching and 59 hours of practical skills training.
To become a STNA you must be able to finish the program and get your license by passing the state exams. The competency evaluation exam, consists of two parts. To gain entry into the Registry, you must be able to pass all the tests. Your name will then be entered into the Registry and you will receive your license. Your license will be valid for up to 2 years and must be renewed if you wish to continue being a STNA.
To be eligible for renewal, you must have worked for at least 8 hours within the past 24 months as a paid STNA. The place that you worked should also be a licensed-approved facility for your work to be considered qualified. If your license has lapsed and you can still renew it if you are able to provide proof that you were able to work within the allotted time. If you have not, then you can take additional training and pass the evaluation tests.
