The state does not allow any individual to work as a nursing assistant in any healthcare facility if their name is not entered in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. There are several means for you to choose from to get your name entered. One of the simplest ways is to pass the state’s competency exams. Before you can take on the exams you must first become eligible to apply by enrolling in a CNA training course.
As a nursing assistant student, you will be spending a total of 40 training hours, which will already include the necessary course work. Your hours will be spent on lectures on different concepts like infection control, mental health, rehabilitation, different medical terms, and communication skills. You will also be trained on the different competency skills like feeding through special means like NGTs, performing full or partial bed baths, offering and removing bedpans, assisting in the performance or ROM exercises, and other daily activities of the patient/resident.
After your training, you may then submit your completed application form. You can download a copy at http://www.idph.state.il.us/nar/cnafacts.htm. Aside from the form, you are also required to send fingerprint cards, ID photo, passport size pictures, physical test results, as well as the results for the background checks for criminal records. After you submit an application and take and pass the two part certification exam you will become eligible to work anywhere in the state of Illinois.
