One of the major requirements of being a certified nursing assistant in the state of Maryland is that you have attended an approved nursing assistant training class. Certified nursing assistant training programs must provide curriculum covering CNA skills coursework and practical health care experience in order to qualify. After completing an approved class, you can then submit an application to take a certification exam. Upon certification your license will be valid up to two years. You can contact the MD Board of Nursing to get additional specifics about requirements and qualifications needed by calling them at 410-585-1990.
There are several career options that are available to you once you become a nursing assistant. After you get your name on the Nurse Aide Registry, you will be able to choose from advance degrees such as Geriatric Nurse Aide, Home Health Aide, Certified Medicine Aide, Dialysis Technician, and may more. Each one of these advance certifications will require you to have a valid license that is free of records such as patient abuse or neglect. There will also be some certifications that will be required for you to work in specific locations such as comprehensive health care facilities.
If you come from a different state and also possess advance certifications, you will have to apply to the appropriate registry if you wish to practice. For example, if you are a nursing assistant from a different state, you will be required to apply for the out-of-state nurse aide registry, which is still under the management of the Maryland Board of Nursing. When applying, you will need to submit either a copy of your Federal Tax ID number or your Social Security number. As of January 27, 2012, this has become mandatory and those applications without those will not be processed.
