To become a nursing assistant, you will need to follow the both the state and federal requirements. All individuals who are currently doing routine nursing tasks that are delegated by an RN is required to register to the Nurse Aide Registry. This registry is overseen by the Maryland Board of Nursing, and is a master list of all the CNAs in the state. Only those whose names are on the Registry will be allowed to work in a healthcare institution as a nursing assistant.
In order to become one, you must be able to enroll and complete a state-approved training program. These programs will offer you no less than 100 hours of training. Your training will be composed of lectures, skills training, and clinical lectures. You must make sure that the training program provides the appropriate amount of instruction. Currently classes must offer a total of 100 hours of combined classroom course work and clinical hands-on experience. Once you complete your training, you will then need to pass the skills evaluation and the written exams before you can apply for the Registry.
After you have your name on the registry list, you will be able to work as a nursing assistant for up to two years. If you wish to continue working, then you must renew your license. Renewing your license is very important since your license will be considered invalid once it expires and you will need to start from the beginning.
