Completing an approved training program is a necessary step in becoming a nursing aide. With the number of people now training to become nursing aides, it is important that new nursing aides are able to meet both the federal and state standards.
If you want to work in California as a nursing assistant then you must have a license issued by the CA state registry. To ensure that the training you receive is proper, you must only enroll in a program that is approved by the California Department of Public Health. The CDPH is the one responsible for certifying and monitoring all CNA programs in California.
Approved programs offer a minimum of 150 hours of training. They are all headed by qualified Instructors with backgrounds in planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing education programs. The training curriculums are divided into at least 50 hours of classroom lessons and 100 hours of supervised clinical practice. Programs are also required to teach, but are not limited to, the following concepts:
• Patient’s Rights
• Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• Safety Precautions
• Proper Body Mechanics
• Infection Control
• Weights and Measurements
• Patient Care Skills
• Basic Nursing Procedures
• Vital Signs
• Nutrition
• Emergency Procedures
• Long-term Care Patients
• Rehabilitative Nursing Care
• Observation and Proper Documentation
• Death and Dying
Once you complete a training program, your next step is to finalize your eligibility by submitting the Initial Application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070503.pdf) to the CDPH. Once they deem you eligible, you can then submit your completed application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070508.pdf) for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam to the Regional Testing Center in your area.
The NNAAP exam consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a clinical skills exam. If you pass all the tests, you will receive a CNA certificate from the Aide and Technician Certification Section. Challenging this exam is the final step in becoming a certified nursing assistant. Since your training is only valid for 2 years, you must pass the NNAAP exam within that time. If you fail to pass within 2 years after completing your training, you will be required to undergo retraining. You must pass both portions of the test within three attempts each or be required to retrain.
Those who pass are added to the nurse aide registry which enable you to work as a nursing assistant in CA. For any questions regarding the CNA certification exam, please call the CDPH at (916) 327-2245 or visit www.cdph.ca.gov. For questions related to the NNAAP exam, please visit www.pearsonvue.com or call (800) 475-8290.
If you are a holder of a CNA license that was issued from a different state, you can apply for reciprocity. When applying, your license should still be active and your name included in the state’s nurse’s aide registry. You should not have any criminal records that may prevent you from working. Examples of these records include acts of negligence, malpractice, and patient abuse. You can contact the California Department of Public Health at (916) 327-2445 to learn more about certification requirements and eligibility.
