There are two parts of the license exams. The first part is the written examination. This exam is composed of 60 items which are all multiple-choice. The 10 questions are pretest items and will not be scored. They are included in the exams for statistical purposes. The exam topics will focus on three domains. These domains will cover the different roles of a nurse aide, the promotion of the safety of the patient, and the promotion of function and health of residents. The first domain, which is the roles of the nurse aide, will include questions like the different requirements for maintaining certification. The other domains will be about the different risk factors and how to prevent them and the importance of the different aspects of a resident’s activities.
The second portion is about skills evaluation. A computer will randomly select 5 nursing skills for you to perform. You will then be given a certain scenario where you will do all procedures. To pass this part, you must perform all procedures satisfactorily. A nurse aide evaluator will observe you and see if you performed the different checkpoints for each skill. At the end of the exam, the evaluators observations will be entered in the computer where the Prometric system will rate if you passed or fail.
