To work as a nursing aide in South Carolina, you must be certified. You can only be certified if your name is on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. If you do not have any background in the field of health, then the only way for you to get into the NAR is by challenging the NNAAP exam.
Before you can take on the exam, you must first complete a 100-hour training program that is approved by the state’s Department of Health and Human Services. Nursing students and graduates may also apply directly for the exam. Military-trained medics who wish to apply for the exams must first send their transcripts to scnar@scdhhs.gov to be review for eligibility.
The first part of the exam is the knowledge tests. Candidates will have the option to take its written or oral version. Since the knowledge test is normally offered in its written form, those who wish to take the oral test must submit letter of request when applying for the exam. If you are confused on what type of exam you should take, you can take a self-assessment reading test. Each candidate will be given a maximum of 2 hours to answer all 70 multiple-choice questions and will be notified if there are only 15 minutes left.
The second part of the exam is the skills evaluation. In this part, each candidate will be required to perform 5 nursing skills in a given scenario. They will only have a maximum of 30 minutes to perform all tasks. Out of the 5 nursing skills, only 4 will be random since one will always be proper hand-washing. You can see the complete list of nursing skills that may come out of the exam in the Candidate Handbook, which you can download at http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/074100.pdf.
During the day of your exam, please arrive at least 30 minutes before your actual scheduled time. Latecomers will not be allowed to enter the exam area and will not get a refund. You must also bring two valid IDs for your check in like a driver’s license, Social Security Card, or Passport. In order to be listed on the NAR, you must pass all the tests within 2 years of completing your training or within 3 attempts. If you fail to do this, you will need to complete another training program, before you can apply again.
