A CNA certification is a requirement to work in a Medicaid-certified nursing facility in South Carolina. The first step in becoming certified is to enroll in a state-approved CNA training program. To be accepted in one, you must be at least 18 years old, be physically capable of taking care of the patients, possess a high school diploma or something equivalent, have complete immunizations, as well as pass the criminal background check.
Enrolling in a training program will educate you on what the tasks and duties of a nursing aide are and how to properly perform them. Most nursing care that nursing aides provide are basic and routine. They get to assist the patients with their daily activities while being supervised by RNs and LPNs.
When you complete your training, you will be able to apply for the certification exam. When completing the application forms (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/074101.pdf), you will need to provide proof of your training, your social security number, birth certificate, and the payment of the testing fee. The fee of $101, for both the written/oral test and skills evaluation, must be in the form of a money order, Pearson VUE voucher, company or cashier’s check. Personal checks will not be accepted.
All these must be sent to NACES Plus Foundation Inc., 8501 North Mopac Expressway, Suite 400 Austin, Texas 78759. Once received, they will then send you your Authorization to Test Notice, which is a yellow confirmation card; this card contains important information regarding your certification exam. If you are unavailable on your scheduled day, please inform NACES no less than 5 business days before your exam date to cancel or reschedule.
During your exam date, please bring 2 government-issued IDs for the check in. You should also arrive at least 30 minutes before the actual scheduled time to avoid being late. Latecomers will not be allowed to test and will not receive a refund.
If you are able to pass both portions of the exam, your name will be listed on the Nurse Aide Registry. Pearson VUE will also send your CNA card along with your wallet ID card. To remain eligible for work as a CNA, you must find work as a nursing assistant for at least 8 hours every 2 years. Please renew your certification before it expires. Expired certifications can no longer be renewed.
