Passing the certification exams is one of the ways to get into the Nurse Aide Registry. According to the law, only nursing assistants who are listed on the NAR will be allowed to work in long term care facilities. Before you can apply for the exams, you will need to establish eligibility by:
• Completing a state-approved training program. These programs take 100 hours to complete, with a minimum of 40 hours of clinical practice. In these programs, the students will be taught the different concepts that were required in OBRA. Before they start their clinical training, they will first cover concepts like infection control, communication skills, personal care, patients’ rights and independence, and many more.
• Completing a CNA training program that is offered in another state. To qualify, the program you completed should have had at least 100 hours of training, as well as cover the topics that meet both federal and state standards.
• Getting trained as a medic by the military. This route is given on a case to case basis. To determine if you are eligible to apply, please send your transcript and experience to scnar@scdhhs.gov.
• Graduate from a nursing education program or become a licensed practical nurse.
Once you establish your eligibility, you may now complete the application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/074101.pdf) for the exam. Since this will be your first time to take the certification exam, you will be required to take both the written/oral test and the clinical skills demonstration. You will also need to pay the testing fee of $101. This payment must be in the form of money order, cashier’s check, or Pearson VUE vouchers and may payable to NACES Plus Foundation Inc., 8501 North Mopac Expressway, Suite 400 Austin, Texas 78759.
If you fail in at least one of the exams, you will be given another 2 chances to retake. When you retake the exams, you will only need to take the one that you failed. These attempts must also be done within 2 years of completing your training. If you use up all your chances, you will have to retrain before you can apply again.
Another way of getting into the NAR is by applying for reciprocity. The process of reciprocity allows a nursing assistant who is listed in another state’s NAR to transfer his credentials and gain entry into another NAR. When applying, the applicant must pass the national background check; have a clean record and a valid certification. The application forms can be downloaded at http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/074102.pdf.
