Proper training is always important in any career that you wish to pursue. That is why the first step in becoming a nursing assistant in South Carolina is to enroll in a state-certified nursing assistant course. These courses will offer no less than 100 hours of training, which will include a minimum of 40 hours of practical training. In your training, you will cover different concepts in the Fundamentals of Nursing such as infection control, safety and emergency procedures, patients’ rights and independence, personal care, therapeutic communication techniques, and many more.
Once you are through with the training course, you will be ready to challenge the CNA certification exam. This exam was designed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Inc. to test the competency of aspiring nursing assistants. This exam is divided into two parts that will test the candidates in both knowledge and skills. If they are able to pass both of them, they will gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry.
In order to work as a nursing assistant, you must be certified. A nursing assistant can only be considered certified if his name is listed on the Nurse Aide Registry. Once you are certified, you will be allowed to work for 24 months at Medicaid nursing facilities. If you wish to continue your eligibility, you must work for at least 8 hours providing nursing and nursing-care services while being supervised by a licensed nurse.
Pearson VUE will send a Notice to your mailing address at least 1 month in advance before your certification expires. To make sure that you will have no problems receiving this, it is your responsibility to inform the Registry if you changed your name or address. Updating your information on the NAR is free. To do this, you can call (800) 475-8290.
If you fail to renew your certification on time, it will expire. An expired certification can no longer be renewed. If you wish to become a CNA again, then you will have to start all over. This means that you will have to complete another training program and challenge the certification exam afterwards.
