To work as a nursing aide in North Carolina you must have a CNA certification. This in only possible for those who were able to pass the state competency exam. The Department of Health and Human Service contracted Pearson VUE to help in conducting, scoring, and releasing the results of the exam. If you want to know more about the exams, you may go to their official website at www.pearsonvue.com. You can also download a copy of the NA Candidate Handbook from the site.
The first part of the exam is the knowledge test. This portion is normally offered as a written test. It consists of 70 multiple-choice questions. Ten of the items are pretest items and are not included in the total score. You will be given a total of 2 hours to answer all of the items.
An oral exam may be taken instead of a written exam. It may be taken in either English or Spanish. You must make the request to take the oral exam when filling out your application to take the exam. Unlike the written test, the oral exam consists of 2 parts. The first part will be 60 multiple-choice items which will cover the usual concepts of the exams. The second part consists of 10 multiple-choice questions testing your ability to recognize commonly used English words in the clinical setting. You will also have 2 hours to answer all the questions.
The second portion of the competency exam is the skills evaluation exam. During this part, you will be asked to perform 5 nursing skills in front of a nursing aide evaluator. The first of the skills will always be proper hand washing while the other 4 will be randomly selected. To pass this part, you must do all the skills satisfactory. The evaluator will base your performance on the checkpoints developed for each skill.
To get your CNA certificate, you pass all the parts of the test. Every candidate is given 3 attempts to pass the test. In addition, you must also get certified within 2 years of completing your training. If you fail to pass the exam within 3 attempts or 2 years, you will be required to complete another training program before you can apply for the test again.
