The first step in becoming a nursing aide in South Carolina is to find a suitable CNA program to enroll in. Training programs are offered by different institutions, both private and public. Before you enroll in a program, you have to make sure that the program is approved by the SC Department of Health and Human Services. By completing a state-approved program, you will become eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam or the NNAAP exam.
Approved programs are required to offer a minimum of 100 hours of training, with at least 40 hours of clinical practice. Their curriculum covers the concepts that were required by the federal and the state. During the clinical practice portion of the training, the students will be placed under the supervision of a qualified instructor. These instructors must be a licensed nurse with at least 2 years of nursing experience. They must have completed a Train the Trainer course, and have background experience in training adults or supervising nursing aide students.
Challenging the NNAAP exam is the final step in being a nursing aide. If you are able to pass the written/oral test and the clinical skills evaluation test, your name will be added to the Nurse Aide Registry. Once your name is on the Registry and you have completed all requirements, you will become a certified nursing aide. Only individuals who are listed on the Registry will be allowed to work as a nursing aide in this state, especially in Medicaid nursing facilities.
Your name on the NAR will remain only for 24 months. If you do not want it to be removed, you will have to renew your certification. You can only renew your certification if you were able to work as a paid nursing aide for at least 8 hours or a day. When you renew, you will need to send the completed renewal forms and the payment of the renewal fee of $28. The payment should be in the form of a money order or a bank cashier’s check and made payable to Pearson VUE. CNAs who are working for a Medicaid nursing facility will not be allowed to pay for their fees since they fees must be paid for by their current employer.
