If you want to work as a nurse aide in the State of Wyoming, then you better get a CNA certification. Although the state does allow temporary work as an non-certified nurse aide, you’ll need a certification if you wish to work for more than 120 days. However, it does not take that long to finish a course, take the tests and become certified. Additionally, if you are not satisfied with a basic license, you can use this experience as a great stepping stone for a higher degree in the medical field.
Nurse Aide Training
Nurse aides work closely with patients, almost entirely throughout their shifts. To ensure that the patients receive quality care from their nurse aides, nurse aides must receive proper training by enrolling in a CNA program that’s approved by the state. You can find a number of suitable programs offered though:
– Hospitals
– Nursing homes
– Assisted living centers
– Community colleges
– Vocational schools
– Technical colleges
– Government organizations
Approved programs are required to offer no less than 105 hours. Curriculum must meet the federal requirements of 75 hours of classroom instructions and 16 hours of supervised clinical practice. A training facility has the freedom to allocate the remaining hours or add some more. Before students are allowed to handle any patient, they must first spend 16 hours learning the following concepts:
a. Infection Control
b. Patients’ Rights and Independence
c. Medical Terminologies
d. Communication and Interpersonal Skills
e. Basic Nursing Care
f. Personal Care
g. Safety Precaution and Emergency Care
h. Roles and Responsibilities
Certification Exam
Upon completion of an approved training program, a nurse aide candidate will be allowed to apply for the State Certification Exam, which is conducted by the American Red Cross in coordination with Pearson VUE. You can get the application forms by visiting this link: https://nursing-online.state.wy.us/Resources/CNA%20Exam%20App%2010-25-2013.pdf.
All applications must be complete and accurate before sending it to this address:
American Red Cross/ Wyoming NNAAP
1804 North Sixth Street
Harrisburg, PA 17102
The certification exam is initially offered as a written test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates who have trouble reading can request to take the oral exam instead. The request to take the oral exam must be indicated upon application. In addition, candidates must also indicate whether they wish to take the English or Spanish oral exam.
Each candidate is given a maximum of 5 attempts to pass. These attempts are only valid within one year after completing one’s training. If you fail to pass within the number of attempts, or within the time limit, you won’t be allowed to work as a nurse aide.
Certification through Endorsement
A nurse aide who is certified in another state(s) may transfer his or her certification(s) to Wyoming and work as a CNA without the need for further training or testing. To qualify, the applicant must have a valid certification and a clean record. Since the endorsement process varies in duration, the state is willing to give a non-renewable temporary permit. This permit will allow the applicant to work as a nurse aide in the state for 90 days.
