The completion of a nurse aide training program will allow you to work as a nursing assistant for up to 4 months at any healthcare facility you choose. Because of the importance of the patients receiving only top quality care, it is mandatory that you receive the proper training before you are to care for them. Unlike other states, once you finished a nursing assistant training program, you are allowed to work for a limited number of hours in a nursing facility even if you are not yet passed the state exams. If you want to work full time, you will have to pass the state exams and get your license.
You can find CNA classes almost anywhere in the state. They are offered by different institutions such as colleges and community training center. In order to complete the program, you must have a total of 180 hours of training. Your training will be composed of classroom instructions, skills training, as well as the required lab training. Another benefit of completing a state-approved program is that you will also be able to apply for the license exams. These exams are composed of a written and a skills demonstration exam. If you are able to pass both of them, your name will be automatically entered in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. Once your name is entered there, you will be allowed to work for two years before you need to renew by submitting work verification.
There is additional training required to become a CNA-M or Medication Aide. This allows you to administer non-injectable medications to residents and patients under your care. For more information about how to qualify you can call the Maine State Board of Nursing from 8 A.M to 4:30 P.M, M-F at (207) 287-1133.
