If you want to become a nursing aide in South Carolina, then you will have to attend a state-approved training program. When you enroll, you will learn different nursing concepts which you will use to take care of the patients.
CNA approved programs in this state are required to offer no less than 100 hours of training. The training program will be divided into lectures and practical training. Before you handle any patients, you will cover the basic concepts of personal care, basic care, infection control, communication techniques, safety and emergency procedures, and patients’ rights and independence.
By completing a state-approved program, you will become eligible to apply for the nursing aide certification exam. This exam consists of a written test and a skills evaluation tests, which are given on the same day at approved testing sites. A failed test means a failed certification exam. You will be given another 2 attempts to pass. You may take the exam again after 45 days. When you reapply and take the exam, you will only need to take the part that you failed.
If there are not technical problems, your score reports will be sent back within 10 minutes after they are faxed to Pearson VUE for scoring. If you passed everything, your name will be entered on the Nurse Aide Registry. Once your name is on the Registry, you will be allowed to work as a nursing aide in South Carolinas, including Medicaid nursing facilities.
Your name on the NAR will remain for only 2 years. If you wish to continue your eligibility to work, you must work for at least 8 hours every 2 years. For your work to be qualified, you must perform nursing aide services for compensation, while under the supervision of a registered nurse or a medical staff member.
Pearson VUE will send you a Notice within 60 days before your certification’s expiration. This notice will include the necessary forms that you will need to fill-out for your renewal. There is also a section in the forms which must be done by your current or last employer. If you do not receive the forms, you can download a copy from http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/074103.pdf.
