The state of Tennessee requires its nursing assistants to have certifications before they can start working in a health care facility. To get their certification, they must take and pass the license exams. Before they can apply for the exams, they must meet some requirements like completing a CNA training program and going through a state and federal background check.
Classes are required to teach fundamental nursing skills in 25 different categories. Instruction is administered by a registered nurse with a minimum of 2 years of work experience. During your instruction you will get both hands-on skills training and classroom coursework. Once you have finished your school requirement you can apply to take the competency exam. The exam will test you on 5 of the skills you learned during your CNA training. After completing both the training and exam successfully you will be placed on the Tennessee nurse aide registry for 24 months. In order to remain in good standing you will be required to work an 8 hour shift as a nursing assistant for each 2 year period and show verification to the registry.
