You can become a nursing assistant by completing a state-approved CNA training program, submitting to a background screening, submitting necessary identification and taking and passing the license examination.
You should make sure the training that you enroll in is state approved and provides the appropriate amount of hours of instruction. At this time programs must offer at least 75 classroom and clinical experience hours combined. Courses should offer instruction in 25 different nursing tasks and skills. Classes are recquired to be coordinated by an experienced RN and teach basic health care procedures and components defined by state and federal regulations, along with a clinical component to teach you hands-on skill proficiencies.
Once you have received your training you can apply to take the competency exam. The tests are comprised of a written and a skills demonstration part. During the testing you will be recquired to demonstrate five of the skills you learned in class. You will also need to score a 70% rating or better on the written exam. Once you have passed you will be included for 24 months on the nurse aide registry.
